Site Selection Recommendations

  1. Choose a site that is NOT located within a third-party private property or restricted access area, including areas marked as sensitive habitats or areas under restoration.

  2. Make sure your site has easy access by foot. Do not go into areas with steep embankments or where ground is unstable. Do not cross train tracks or busy roads.

  3. Make sure there are no homeless encampments or transient persons inhabiting the area. Be watchful of wildlife (e.g., snakes, etc).

  4. When possible choose a site close to a main street or road.

Site Naming Suggestions

If you are part of a group, school or company that is monitoring multiple sites name your sites so that you can identify them easily from each other. Some suggestions include:

  • Waterbody_Company_Team (e.g., sandiegoriver_1)
  • Waterbody_Schoolnamegrade_TeachersInitials (e.g., sandiegoriver_sandiegohs11_hs)

Also refer to other suggestions provided at the WWMD Website: www.worldwatermonitoringday.org

Other Important Monitoring Tips

  1. Avoid areas where water flow is strong.
  2. Sample in pairs. Never go alone.
  3. Wear closed toed shoes (rubber boots work well) and other appropriate gear.
  4. Don't leave trash behind or disturb the habitat or wildlife (e.g., stay on established trails).
  5. Wash your hands with soap when you return from the sampling site.
  6. THINK SAFETY FIRST!
