Water Monitoring Testing

pH Level

pH is a measurement of the acidic or basic quality of water. The pH scale ranges from a value of 0 (very acidic) to 14 (very basic), with 7 being neutral.

What You'll Need:

• Large test tube.
• Sample container with your collected water sample.
• Protective gloves.
• Color chart from your test kit.

pH Level Test Procedure:

1. Fill the larger test tube from your kit to the 10 mL line (upper line) with your water sample.
2. Take one pH Wide Range TesTab from the foil pack that says "pH" and add it to the test tube.
3. Cap the tube and mix by turning the tube over and over until the tablet disintegrates. Bits of material may remain in the sample. But, that's OK.
4. Compare the color of the sample to the pH color chart from your test kit. Record the result as pH on your field data sheet.

Most natural bodies of water have a pH level of 6.5 pH to 8.2 pH. But, if you live near a body of water affected by industrial waste, agricultural runoff, or drainage from improperly run mining operations, your results may differ quite a bit.
