The Tijuana River Watershed spans the U.S. Mexico border and covers approximately 1,750 mi2, with one-third of watershed in California and two-thirds in Baja California. The natural resources are rich and varied. The watershed is located in an internationally recognized hotspot of biodiversity where a large number of threatened or endangered plant and animal species are found.
More than one million people live within the boundaries of the Tijuana River Watershed. There are many political jurisdictions that govern portions of the watershed including; the County of San Diego, the City of San Diego, the City of Imperial Beach, several Native American Reservations, and the municipalities of Tijuana, Tecate, and Ensenada. The States of California and Baja California also provide governance for areas of the watershed, as do federal agencies from Mexico and the United States.
